Open Arms Receives Grant Support From Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, Securian, BankCherokee, and Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union

Open Arms of Minnesota receives three grants from Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and Securian, BankCherokee, and Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union through the Member Impact Fund

Open Arms of Minnesota is thrilled to announce it has received multiple grants from local financial institutions and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) through the Member Impact Fund. These grants include:

  • $100,000 from Securian Life Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Securian Financial
  • $20,000 from BankCherokee
  • $10,000 from Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union

These grants are part of $20 million in funding awarded by FHLB Des Moines through a matching grant program to support community development in Minnesota.

Open Arms CEO Leah Hebert Wells expressed her gratitude to these partners on behalf of everyone at the organization. “Thank you for standing with us during this challenging time and for being an important member of our strong, caring community. Your partnership keeps us going and lifts our clients and community.”

This funding will cover the cost of providing Open Arms’ medically tailored meals plus nutrition education/counselling to 32 clients for six months each. Put another way, it will enable Open Arms to prepare and deliver more than 11,800 meals to critically ill clients across the Twin Cities metro. Each of these financial institutions also support Open Arms through employee volunteerism, creating an engaged and meaningful partnership.

“At Securian Financial, we know that stability starts with meeting basic needs like access to healthy food. That’s why our strong partnership with Open Arms through the Member Impact Fund means so much to us. Together, we’re able to amplify their incredible work providing nourishment, comfort, and dignity to people when they need it most, and we’re proud to stand alongside them in strengthening our community.” Kate Mayer, Assistant Director, Securian Financial Foundation

FHLB Des Moines provides funding solutions to more than 1,200 members to support mortgage lending, economic development and affordable housing in the communities they serve. The Member Impact Fund provides FHLB Des Moines members up to $3 for every $1 in matching grant donations to strengthen the ability of not-for-profits or government entities to support the needs of their communities.

“The Member Impact Fund enables our members to directly support local organizations who matter to them, creating value and a profound impact in their own communities,” said Kris Williams, president and CEO of FHLB Des Moines. “The commitment of Securian, BankCherokee, and Affinity Federal Credit Union to champion organizations like Open Arms of Minnesota inspires us all.”

Recipient organizations were selected based on the needs for grant funding to support capacity-building or working capital necessary to strengthen their ability to serve affordable housing or community development needs including job training, affordable housing, financial literacy, food banks and youth programs.

Since its founding in 2023, the Member Impact Fund has supported affordable housing and community development with nearly $70 million in grants awarded by FHLB Des Moines. Member institutions apply and receive Member Impact Fund matching grants to be distributed to eligible organizations alongside their own grant contribution.
