“ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL ACT” HARMS Open Arms Clients
Budget Reconciliation Passes The House
What’s happening
The House passed Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill” on Thursday in a razor-thin 215-214 vote, sending the legislation — which includes the most drastic overhaul to Medicaid since the program was founded — to the Senate for review.
Why it matters
If passed by the Senate, this bill would cause significant harm to Open Arms clients. The bill contains cuts and restrictions to vital services like Medicaid that will negatively impact our clients but will also increase the demand for our medically tailored meal and nutrition services when we are already facing high levels of need and insufficient federal funding.
What you can do
Urge our Senators to vote “NO” on the reconciliation bill. Please use the call/email script below to ensure that our Senators vote “No” on the reconciliation bill that just passed the House of Representatives. This bill threatens critical funding for Medicaid that directly impacts Open Arms clients. If these cuts go through, it will likely result in increased demand for Open Arms medically tailored meals and nutrition services at a time when federal funding for Open Arms programs is already insufficient.
Ask Senators Klobuchar and Smith to vote “No” by placing a phone call and/or sending an email:
- Contact our Minnesota Senator’s Washington DC offices by dialing the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to be connected.
- Use the phone script and/or email template below to contact Senators Smith and Klobuchar

Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m calling on behalf of Open Arms of Minnesota located in the Twin Cities. My name is [INSERT NAME]. I am emailing on behalf of Open Arms of Minnesota providing medically tailored meals and nutrition services to approximately 2,000 Minnesota individuals and their families. I strongly urge Senator Klobuchar/Smith to vote “no” on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which will impact Open Arms clients by making detrimental cuts to Medicaid. We are calling on the United States Senate to prioritize critically ill and food insecure Americans and protect the vital programs on which they rely. If these programs are cut or restricted, it will increase the demand for Open Arms programs already struggling to meet the current need from critically ill individuals who are at significant risk of malnutrition and isolation.
Open Arms clients cannot adhere to potential work requirements that could be imposed with new Medicaid cuts because they are suffering from either critical or chronic illnesses and unable to work. We urge you to protect and strengthen these proven and effective programs by voting “no” on this budget reconciliation bill and protecting this vital lifeline for Minnesota’s sick who are also food insecure.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this request to help ensure that no individual in our community faces unnecessary cuts to fundamental programs.
