OPEN FARMS
Nourishing our clients with fresh, organic veggies
Open Arms grows three acres of organic vegetables in a garden called Open Farms, located at Prairie Oaks Institute in Belle Plaine. In our garden, we use natural, ecological processes for fertilization and pest control.
In part, that's because Open Farms provides a healthy portion of the vegetable needs -- more than 30,000 pounds -- for the Open Arms kitchen, which prepares the nutritious meals we deliver to our clients, people who are living with life-threatening illness in the Twin Cities.
The farm is also home to the Open Arms farm, food and nutrition program, which partners with community organizations in the Phillips neighborhood to bring middle-school age kids out to the farm and into the Open Arms kitchen. During the program, kids learn how to recognize, grow harvest and cook their own vegetables, as well as how their service in the garden will help people in their community.
And, for our youngest volunteers, there's a children's garden -- a vegetable and flower plot where even the smallest hands can help plant, water and harvest.
Join us as a volunteer and help our farm grow!It will take a lot of work to grow our vegetables, so we're looking for volunteers to help us.
