Monkeybiz is an extraordinary economic empowerment program that is also revitalizing the art of beadwork in South Africa. Township women are provided richly colored glass beads with which to create stunning pieces of beaded art. The proceeds from the sale of these creations go back to the women who created them and to their communities.
Open Arms has strengthened our relationship with Monkeybiz by promoting their product in the United States, and by sponsoring a soup kitchen for the beaders. We make certain that when women make the long trip from the townships to Cape Town on market days, or to visit the Monkeybiz Wellness Center, that there is a hot meal for them.
To fund these initiatives, we hold sales throughout the year, with all the proceeds going back to our programs in South Africa.
