In 2000, a small group from Open Arms, on tour of the townships outside of Cape Town, South Africa, found themselves face-to-face with the devastation the AIDS pandemic was causing in sub-Saharan Africa. It was clear to everyone that day that action was needed, that as global citizens it was their obligation and moral duty to do something. On that day, Open Arms made the decision to open our arms to people in the township of Guguletu and we became the first organization of our kind in the United States to partner with a community center to begin providing food and nutrition to people who are living with HIV/AIDS there.
