Open Arms began preparing and delivering meals in 1986. We served five clients that first week. Since then, the number of people we serve has steadily increased and we now serve 480 home-delivery clients and their caregivers and dependent children each week. Our clients are men and women, young and old, married and single, parents and grandparents, gay and straight, and racially and ethnically diverse.
A few more facts: Almost 20 percent of our clients have dependent children. In 1996, approximately 27 percent of our clients represented minority populations; today, that number is closer to 50 percent. More and more we see a link between poverty and AIDS. Approximately 60 percent of the people we serve live on less than $10,000 a year.
