Our History

Open Arms began preparing and delivering meals to people living with HIV/AIDS in 1986. We served five clients the first week. Since then, the number of people we serve has steadily increased: 97 clients in 1995, 252 in 2001, and more than 500 individuals in 2006. Our clients include men and women, young and old, married and single, parents and grandparents, gay and straight, racially and ethnically diverse.

But things constantly change:

  • We're serving twice as many families this year as we did in 1998
  • In 1997, 9 percent of our clients were over the age of 50. Today, that number is 31 percent.
  • In 1996, approximately 27 percent of our clients represented minority populations. Today, that number is over 50 percent.
  • More and more we see a link between poverty and AIDS. Today, approximately 75 percent of the people we serve live on less than $10,000 a year.
  • In 2005, we began a pilot program to serve people with MS, ALS, and women in treatment for breast cancer. We made this a permanant part of our program in 2006.

As our clients represent increasingly diverse populations and varied needs, we create menus to provide them the best possible service.
